BIG LABEL (ON VERSO) TRANSLATED:

A. Riis Carstensen, maritime painter, born November 9th 1844 in Sennels near Tisted. Son of parish priest J. F. Carstensen. Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the Model School (Note: The Model School was a part of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. The students would draw figure studies after actual models, typically nude and male) Student of C. Dahl who taught him the art of maritime painting. In 1879 he won the Neuhausen Prize for his painting “Sunrise in the Kattegat”. (Note: The Neuhausen Prize is a prize given by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts through former student Jens Neuhausen’s scholarship foundation) Exhibited in New York. He went on long journeys in south and north by ship and exhibited his work after his travel studies. He visited Greenland in 1884-88 and Egypt in the 90’s. Many paintings from these travels are sold in England and America.
